The RLC of Central East Florida’s Constitution Day Dinner: A Perspective from a Liberty Republican

By Lee Even Neher, Vice Chairman RLC Louisiana

The RLC of Central East Florida has held an event to celebrate Constitution Day for the past 10 years. Each event growing larger in stature and outdoing the previous year’s gala. This year’s Constitution Day Dinner took place at the Hilton Melbourne Rialto Place in Melbourne, FL on September 23rd. Guests were originally scheduled to hear from Judge Andrew Napolitano, but due to the Supreme Court proceeding coverage on Fox News, he was called back to work. In his place, the RLC-FL brought in the “Godfather of the Movement” himself, Dr. Ron Paul.

This wasn’t my first RLC of Central East Florida dinner. I had attended the previous year’s event when Tom Woods was the key note speaker and I was very excited to attend this year’s get together. I had purchased my ticket several weeks in advance including the VIP access. I was looking forward to meeting the Judge and hopefully hearing any updates about his upcoming return to cable news. When I heard that he was not able to attend and was being replaced by Dr. Paul, I was pleasantly surprised. In all my years of following his political career, I had never actually met the man who inspired much of my own political thought.

On the day of the dinner, I arrived an hour prior to the scheduled start time to find that the party had already begun. The reception area was already crowded as I made my way to the check in table then on to the VIP suite. Upon entering, I’m greeted by Ron Paul himself and I was instantly star struck. I’ve met Justin Amash, Rand Paul, Thomas Massie, and Mike Lee and never experienced one second of fan stunned silence, but this was Ron Paul. I exchanged pleasantries with the man and even received his autograph on my Austin Petersen “Make Taxation Theft Again” ball cap. A memento that I will proudly keep. The VIP area was a gift to the RLC of Central East Florida from State Senator Debbie Mayfield. Her continuing contributions to the RLC’s efforts garnered her the prestigious Jefferson Cup award this year.

I spent the majority of the time at the event speaking with friends and fellow RLC-ers and getting updated on the happenings in Brevard County and Florida politics in general. The RLC-FL has become a powerful vehicle that represents the libertarian wing of the Republican Party. Candidates have taken notice of how influential the RLC has become and have added this group and their events to their lists of must attend. I can only credit the leadership of the RLC-FL and the tireless work of the volunteers that makes such an organization so successful.

The former gubernatorial candidate and Chairman of the RLC- FL Bob White took the stage to introduce the night’s key note speaker. Chairman White gave an eloquent introduction followed by reading a letter from Congressman Bill Posey awarding Dr. Paul the key to the city for all his efforts serving his nation. Dr. Paul spoke for nearly an hour on various subjects near and dear to the hearts of RLC members. He received several long applauses on issues concerning taxes, tariffs, ending the fed, education, war, and electing representatives who adhere to the Constitution. He finished his speech by acknowledging that it’s groups like the RLC that keep these issues in the public consciousness and that despite the gloominess of some of the issues he was personally optimistic about the future of the country.

The event was an absolute success and I cannot wait to attend next year’s dinner. I’ve personally told my fellow RLC-ers that I will keep my schedule clear in the future just to attend this event. Outside of the national RLC convention, I believe this is the most important function for the RLC to promote. It’s a shining example of the hard work, dedication, and principle that this organization endorses. I encourage all RLC members, regardless of where they reside, to make the trip out and support this event in the future.

Republican Liberty Caucus of Florida Endorses Ron Desantis for Governor

9/12/18 Melbourne, FL – The Republican Liberty Caucus of Florida is proud to announce its endorsement of Ron DeSantis for Governor of Florida.

“In order to keep far-left, democratic socialism at bay in Florida, and to make sure that we continue to build on the strong financial record of the present administration in Tallahassee, we all need to unite behind Ron Desantis for Governor”, said RLC of Florida Chair Bob White.

The Republican Liberty Caucus of Florida is known as the libertarian wing and conscience of the Republican Party. The RLC is a national organization with chapters in states across the country, which was founded in Florida in 1991. Its purpose is to advance the ideals of individual liberty, economic freedom and limited government, within the Republican Party and in turn to make our state a more free and prosperous place to live, work and play.

Ron Desantis served in the US Congress representing Florida’s 6th congressional district for three terms until his resignation on September 10th. He resigned in order to focus on campaigning full-time for Governor stating that he didn’t feel it would be right to continue to draw a salary as a Congressman while campaigning full-time. He is married, has two young children and currently serves as a Lieutenant Commander in the US Navy Reserve. DeSantis is a Harvard and Yale graduate and previously served as a US Navy JAG officer.

White further asserted, “We can all be proud of our Republican nominee for Governor, Ron DeSantis. Ron is a proven leader with a solid conservative record in Congress. We call on all of our members and supporters, and all other Floridians to vote for Ron DeSantis for Governor.”

The general election for statewide, congressional and state legislative offices is being held on November 6th, 2018.

The Republican Liberty Caucus of Florida is known as the libertarian wing and the conscience of the Republican Party and was founded here in Florida in 1991. Its purpose is to advance the ideals of individual liberty, economic freedom and limited government within the Republican Party and in turn make our state a more free and prosperous place to live, work and play.

Randy Fine is running for reelection to a second term in Florida House District 53 which encompasses southern Brevard County and also currently serves as the Vice Chair for the Brevard County legislative delegation. In the private sector, he built and sold numerous businesses and continues to work as a consultant to the gaming industry. Fine graduated from Harvard University with a Masters Degree in Business Administration and is a husband and father of two.

White further asserted, “by signing our Liberty Compact, Fine has stated his commitment to fight for the values we so dearly believe in and we look forward to seeing that put into action this upcoming legislative session.”

Republican Liberty Caucus of Florida Rebukes Mike Hill for Smear Campaign Tactics

0

9/11/18 Fort Walton Beach, FL – The election cycle this year has been contentious and we all now breathe a sigh of relief that the primary season has ended. There have been some overtly negative campaigns this year, but the 2018 Republican primary in Florida House District One will go down in history as one of the ugliest. Everyone unfortunately anticipates some degree of negativity from political campaigns, but there is a line. In his campaign for state representative, Mike Hill has crossed that line.

In addition to the unnecessary attacks invoked by Mike Hill and his campaign – that are all proven false upon further evaluation – they also engaged in unwarranted and deceptive personal attacks against his fellow Republican and RLC endorsed candidate Rebekah Bydlak, some of which were undeniably sexist. Uncontent with solely making personal attacks against his competitor, Mr. Hill went even further and set his target upon Bydlak supporter and fellow Republican and RLC endorsed Congressman Justin Amash (MI-3), repeatedly claiming Amash was a liberal and highlighting his Palestinian heritage. Aside from the outright lie of painting one of the most principled Republican members of Congress as a far-left liberal, it was more than clear that he was making a bigoted swipe regarding the ethnicity of Congressman Amash.

Both Congressman Amash and Rebekah Bydlak are distinguished citizens of integrity and the Republican Liberty Caucus of Florida openly and publicly condemn these horrendous personal attacks from Mike Hill.

As an organization, we are happy to work with any elected official who is willing to work alongside us in making Florida a more free and prosperous place to live, work, and play, and given how turbulent this election cycle has already been we would love to turn over a new leaf. However, due to Mike Hill’s deceitful, inappropriate, and ungentlemanlike conduct during the campaign, we cannot support him and it is extremely unlikely that we will ever consider doing so again in the future.

The Republican Liberty Caucus of Florida, in concert with its Northwest Florida Regional chapter, call upon Mike Hill to publicly apologize for both his personal attacks against Rebekah Bydlak and Congressman Justin Amash along with assuming responsibility for any similar actions that might have been carried out by some of his supporters and campaign associates. Furthermore, we join Congressman Amash’s call upon the Republican Party of Florida to publicly denounce the abhorrent actions of Mike Hill.

The people of the Panhandle deserve better than the smear campaign tactics they were subjected to.

In Liberty!

Chair of the Panhandle RLC and Northwest Regional Director for the RLC of Florida

Send Rand Paul Reinforcements and Vote for Austin Petersen

0

Today is primary day in Missouri. Voters are hitting the polls to decide who will be the Republican nominee and take on incumbent Claire McCaskill in November. The people have two clear choices, to nominate a ladder-climbing and philosophically illiterate politician like Josh Hawley, or a principled and seasoned grassroots leader like Austin Petersen.

Austin has blue collar roots and has amassed just the right amount of political, business and life experience needed to work as a legislator. He was born and raised on a small farm in Peculiar and eventually graduated from Missouri State University. Prior to running for office, he worked as a producer on Judge Andrew Napolitano’s show Freedomwatch on Fox (which is returning to TV soon after six long years) and assisted on both of Congressman Ron Paul’s presidential campaigns. He’s worked with distinguished groups such as Freedomworks and the Atlas Network, founded the Libertarian Republic, Liberty Viral and owns a consulting business.

Petersen is a trailblazer. Instead of wondering who will watch the watchmen, he ran for President as a Libertarian at the age of 35 and finished handily in front of multi-millionaire John McAfee and veteran LP activist Darryl Perry but ultimately behind Governor Gary Johnson.

Like Milton Friedman once said, “I am a libertarian with a small ‘l’ and a Republican with a capital ‘R’. And I am a Republican with a capital ‘R’ on grounds of expediency, not on principle.” After the 2016 election, Petersen joined the GOP.

Senators don’t just write laws, they are elected to represent citizens statewide – which means people from every walk of life. They alone vote to confirm the appointments of U.S. Supreme Court justices, cabinet secretaries, ambassadors and more. The reason their terms of office are so long is so they can act more independently of the lower chamber of Congress and the Executive branch.

Though determination is a big factor, one of the main reasons Rand Paul has been successful in advancing liberty is due to the powers invested into the office itself. Seeing the difference just one Senator can make in Rand further proves why it is so necessary to send him reinforcements like Austin.

There are few who are willing and unafraid to articulate every policy position like Petersen has and even fewer who are willing to stick to their principles when put to the test. Unless people show a tireless commitment to defending and advocating for their beliefs, our beliefs are meaningless.

Every state has different rules and laws regarding primary elections, but Missouri has an open primary system. This means that as long as you are registered to vote in the state of Missouri, you can vote in the Republican primary if you ask for a Republican ballot when you go to cast your ballot.

Too many politicians go to Washington claiming they’ll take out the trash but end up bringing home the government bacon instead. If you live in Missouri and are registered to vote, have already voted or know someone in the state, please stop what you’re doing and tell them to get out and vote for Austin today, our future depends on it.

Rules for Radicals: A Liberty Republican at FreedomFest

0

By Lee Evan Nehr

Having never attended any previous Freedomfest before, I was excited by the prospect of attending this year’s convention. I would finally see the broader liberty movement at work and listen to some of the greatest minds on the subject. In many cases, I was not disappointed. Over the course of the three day event, I heard from Republicans, Libertarians, and Independents talk about the different aspects of our philosophy and its growing impact on the world. The event was billed as a place where all defenders of liberty could gather and share their story, network with others, and discuss where the movement itself was heading. It was an event not to be missed.

I went into the convention with a particular concern on my mind. I had previously read an article written by Bruce Majors, via thefederalist.com, titled “Libertarians Struggle to Distinguish Themselves From Trump” which aroused my curiosity, not to mention the angst of many in the Libertarian Party. The article discussed how Trump, as a Republican, has accomplished many if not all of the major goals of the Libertarian Party by employing a populist strategy to his governing style. As a registered Republican and member of the RLC, I wanted to see how the broader liberty movement was dealing with the growing issue of populism. I wanted an answer to a very specific question, “Where do we go from here?”

Today, many principled Liberty Republicans are finding it difficult to gain attention, break past their respective primaries, get elected, and still maintain their principles. It was easier for Liberty Republicans to campaign and win during the Tea Party days, but that time seems long gone. Many have gotten close, but it’s taken name recognition, a talent pool of dedicated volunteers, money, and the ability to stand for their beliefs while correctly traversing the politics of the day. Many will say that this is nothing new and that politics has always had to catch up to popular culture. While that may be true, I would still agree with Mr. Majors’ over-arching point; liberty candidates are having a hard time distinguishing themselves on the campaign trail after President Trump’s victory. There is hope though.

During the convention, I was able to attend a session titled “Republicans Gone Wild: Reaching the Liberty Curious Generation” whose speakers included Congressman Thomas Massie, Congressman Tom Garrett, Senator Mike Lee, and was moderated by Matt Kibbe. The session itself lasted less than hour and produced solid talking points that, in my opinion, all Liberty Republican candidates as well as Republican Liberty Caucus members should incorporate.

1) Be willing to be disruptive.
2) Coalitions can be built on an issue by issue basis.
3) Focus on the value of freedom.
4) Find the issue that you’re passionate about. You will find support.
5) Say no and mean it.
6) It’s all about spending.
7) Be proud of being a defender of freedom. You are the difference between life and death.

These “rules” for radical liberty minded individuals came from three well known Liberty Republicans who are serving today. They represent a perfect response to the growing populism that is directing our political climate. They’re not adversarial in nature but represent a pragmatic approach to principle. Liberty Republicans are going to continue to have a love/hate relationship with populism, at least for the time being, but with these rules, there is now a direction to follow. After much thought, I have to say that it’s not all bad. This is a tremendous opportunity to shift the concept of what it means to be a Republican. Many are already working towards returning the GOP to the values of liberty that men like Frank Meyer, William Buckley, Barry Goldwater, Ronald Reagan, and Ron Paul have advocated.

A recent Washington Post Article titled “The Next Generation of Republicans” by Eliza Gray details 52 individuals who are working in various organizations and capacities in and around the Liberty Republican movement. The Republican Liberty Caucus is one such organization. We’re at a critical point in time. President Trump has ushered in a disruption in traditional politics and it’s organizations like ours that will make the difference in shaping the beliefs, platform, agenda, party, and government in the years to come. The broader liberty movement is growing and individuals are looking for their place in it. The RLC is the political home for those looking to bring liberty into the mainstream. Our strategy has successfully elected liberty candidates to office and will continue to do so. The future looks bright. Join the RLC.
