The RLC of Central East Florida’s Constitution Day Dinner: A Perspective from a Liberty Republican

By Lee Even Neher, Vice Chairman RLC Louisiana

The RLC of Central East Florida has held an event to celebrate Constitution Day for the past 10 years. Each event growing larger in stature and outdoing the previous year’s gala. This year’s Constitution Day Dinner took place at the Hilton Melbourne Rialto Place in Melbourne, FL on September 23rd. Guests were originally scheduled to hear from Judge Andrew Napolitano, but due to the Supreme Court proceeding coverage on Fox News, he was called back to work. In his place, the RLC-FL brought in the “Godfather of the Movement” himself, Dr. Ron Paul.

This wasn’t my first RLC of Central East Florida dinner. I had attended the previous year’s event when Tom Woods was the key note speaker and I was very excited to attend this year’s get together. I had purchased my ticket several weeks in advance including the VIP access. I was looking forward to meeting the Judge and hopefully hearing any updates about his upcoming return to cable news. When I heard that he was not able to attend and was being replaced by Dr. Paul, I was pleasantly surprised. In all my years of following his political career, I had never actually met the man who inspired much of my own political thought.

On the day of the dinner, I arrived an hour prior to the scheduled start time to find that the party had already begun. The reception area was already crowded as I made my way to the check in table then on to the VIP suite. Upon entering, I’m greeted by Ron Paul himself and I was instantly star struck. I’ve met Justin Amash, Rand Paul, Thomas Massie, and Mike Lee and never experienced one second of fan stunned silence, but this was Ron Paul. I exchanged pleasantries with the man and even received his autograph on my Austin Petersen “Make Taxation Theft Again” ball cap. A memento that I will proudly keep. The VIP area was a gift to the RLC of Central East Florida from State Senator Debbie Mayfield. Her continuing contributions to the RLC’s efforts garnered her the prestigious Jefferson Cup award this year.

I spent the majority of the time at the event speaking with friends and fellow RLC-ers and getting updated on the happenings in Brevard County and Florida politics in general. The RLC-FL has become a powerful vehicle that represents the libertarian wing of the Republican Party. Candidates have taken notice of how influential the RLC has become and have added this group and their events to their lists of must attend. I can only credit the leadership of the RLC-FL and the tireless work of the volunteers that makes such an organization so successful.

The former gubernatorial candidate and Chairman of the RLC- FL Bob White took the stage to introduce the night’s key note speaker. Chairman White gave an eloquent introduction followed by reading a letter from Congressman Bill Posey awarding Dr. Paul the key to the city for all his efforts serving his nation. Dr. Paul spoke for nearly an hour on various subjects near and dear to the hearts of RLC members. He received several long applauses on issues concerning taxes, tariffs, ending the fed, education, war, and electing representatives who adhere to the Constitution. He finished his speech by acknowledging that it’s groups like the RLC that keep these issues in the public consciousness and that despite the gloominess of some of the issues he was personally optimistic about the future of the country.

The event was an absolute success and I cannot wait to attend next year’s dinner. I’ve personally told my fellow RLC-ers that I will keep my schedule clear in the future just to attend this event. Outside of the national RLC convention, I believe this is the most important function for the RLC to promote. It’s a shining example of the hard work, dedication, and principle that this organization endorses. I encourage all RLC members, regardless of where they reside, to make the trip out and support this event in the future.

Republican Liberty Caucus of Florida Endorses Ron Desantis for Governor

9/12/18 Melbourne, FL – The Republican Liberty Caucus of Florida is proud to announce its endorsement of Ron DeSantis for Governor of Florida.

“In order to keep far-left, democratic socialism at bay in Florida, and to make sure that we continue to build on the strong financial record of the present administration in Tallahassee, we all need to unite behind Ron Desantis for Governor”, said RLC of Florida Chair Bob White.

The Republican Liberty Caucus of Florida is known as the libertarian wing and conscience of the Republican Party. The RLC is a national organization with chapters in states across the country, which was founded in Florida in 1991. Its purpose is to advance the ideals of individual liberty, economic freedom and limited government, within the Republican Party and in turn to make our state a more free and prosperous place to live, work and play.

Ron Desantis served in the US Congress representing Florida’s 6th congressional district for three terms until his resignation on September 10th. He resigned in order to focus on campaigning full-time for Governor stating that he didn’t feel it would be right to continue to draw a salary as a Congressman while campaigning full-time. He is married, has two young children and currently serves as a Lieutenant Commander in the US Navy Reserve. DeSantis is a Harvard and Yale graduate and previously served as a US Navy JAG officer.

White further asserted, “We can all be proud of our Republican nominee for Governor, Ron DeSantis. Ron is a proven leader with a solid conservative record in Congress. We call on all of our members and supporters, and all other Floridians to vote for Ron DeSantis for Governor.”

The general election for statewide, congressional and state legislative offices is being held on November 6th, 2018.

Republican Liberty Caucus of Florida Rebukes Mike Hill for Smear Campaign Tactics

0

9/11/18 Fort Walton Beach, FL – The election cycle this year has been contentious and we all now breathe a sigh of relief that the primary season has ended. There have been some overtly negative campaigns this year, but the 2018 Republican primary in Florida House District One will go down in history as one of the ugliest. Everyone unfortunately anticipates some degree of negativity from political campaigns, but there is a line. In his campaign for state representative, Mike Hill has crossed that line.

In addition to the unnecessary attacks invoked by Mike Hill and his campaign – that are all proven false upon further evaluation – they also engaged in unwarranted and deceptive personal attacks against his fellow Republican and RLC endorsed candidate Rebekah Bydlak, some of which were undeniably sexist. Uncontent with solely making personal attacks against his competitor, Mr. Hill went even further and set his target upon Bydlak supporter and fellow Republican and RLC endorsed Congressman Justin Amash (MI-3), repeatedly claiming Amash was a liberal and highlighting his Palestinian heritage. Aside from the outright lie of painting one of the most principled Republican members of Congress as a far-left liberal, it was more than clear that he was making a bigoted swipe regarding the ethnicity of Congressman Amash.

Both Congressman Amash and Rebekah Bydlak are distinguished citizens of integrity and the Republican Liberty Caucus of Florida openly and publicly condemn these horrendous personal attacks from Mike Hill.

As an organization, we are happy to work with any elected official who is willing to work alongside us in making Florida a more free and prosperous place to live, work, and play, and given how turbulent this election cycle has already been we would love to turn over a new leaf. However, due to Mike Hill’s deceitful, inappropriate, and ungentlemanlike conduct during the campaign, we cannot support him and it is extremely unlikely that we will ever consider doing so again in the future.

The Republican Liberty Caucus of Florida, in concert with its Northwest Florida Regional chapter, call upon Mike Hill to publicly apologize for both his personal attacks against Rebekah Bydlak and Congressman Justin Amash along with assuming responsibility for any similar actions that might have been carried out by some of his supporters and campaign associates. Furthermore, we join Congressman Amash’s call upon the Republican Party of Florida to publicly denounce the abhorrent actions of Mike Hill.

The people of the Panhandle deserve better than the smear campaign tactics they were subjected to.
