REPUBLICAN LIBERTY CAUCUS APPLAUDS SENATOR RAND PAUL’S EFFORTS TO RESTORE FISCAL SANITY IN WASHINGTON DC

MELBOURNE, FL -Last week Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) issued a video statement via social media. In the video he said that, according to Senate rules, if the leadership and/or the Budget Committee did not submit a budget plan for 2019, he would introduce one himself.

Paul went on to say that when Republicans were elected they were expected to keep their word, work to rein in spending, shrink government, cut the deficit, and to put forward a plan to balance the budget. He later tweeted his proposal would balance the budget within five years and would include “spending cuts across the board” including welfare and entitlement reforms that would “bring our fiscal house in order.”

Republican Liberty Caucus (RLC) National Chair Matt Nye praised Paul for his efforts.

“In order to get a handle on spending, we must see a return to regular order and Congress must pass a real budget,” Nye said. “Passing a balanced budget should be a basic and routine responsibility of the federal government, yet we haven’t had a balanced budget since 2001.”

This is not the first time Senator Paul has called for fiscal responsibility. In January 2017, Senator Paul issued a similar statement and plan. He spoke on the Senate floor for nearly 10 minutes explaining his plan. The proposal was rejected by a 14-83 vote. His speech can be viewed at –

It’s been more than a year since then, and despite Republican control of all three houses, the country’s fiscal crisis has only grown worse with the passage of the $1.3 trillion omnibus spending bill last month.

“The most recent spending bill was a betrayal of the voters who gave Republicans control of Congress and the White House,” said Matt Nye, RLC National Chairman. “We encourage all Republicans to keep their campaign promises, and to vote in accordance with the basic Republican principles of less government, lower taxes and more personal freedom.”

Rand Paul Becomes a Member of the Republican Liberty Caucus

Naples, FL- During a luncheon held for Senator Rand Paul’s organization Rand PAC, Republican Liberty Caucus executive director, Alex Snitker presented the senator with n RLC Honorary Membership.

Senator Paul has been a long time advocate for liberty in the US Senate and has been endorsed by the Republican Liberty Caucus in years past. The senator expressed his support for the RLC at the luncheon and him and Mr. Snitker had a great conversation with other guests of the luncheon on policy and the climate in Washington DC.

We look forward to working with Senator Paul on legislative issues soon.

Ethics complaints against Brevard commissioners not ‘politically motivated’

https://www.floridatoday.com/story/opinion/2018/04/04/ethics-complaints-against-brevard-commissioners-not-politically-motivated-opinion/485297002/

So far this year three elected officials have stipulated to, and paid fines for, ethics violations regarding their Form 6 financial disclosures.

The violations for County Commissioners Jim Barfield and Curt Smith stemmed from multiple annual Form 6 filings they made as elected officials. West Melbourne Councilwoman Andrea Young’s violation stemmed from a Form 6 filing she made while a candidate in 2015.

I filed the complaints against Barfield and Smith.

Early last year newly-elected Commissioner John Tobia attempted to establish a lobbyist registration ordinance based on one in place for the state Legislature. During the discussion of the item, Smith belittled Tobia’s proposal and went out of his way to boast about how ethical he and the other commissioners were. Smith derided the proposed ordinance as “a solution in search of a problem.”

Smith failed to mention he and Barfield received significant campaign donations from local lobbyists. The ordinance failed to pass, with Barfield, Smith and Commissioner Rita Pritchett voting against.

It is one thing to vote against something you don’t agree with. When you go out of your way to belittle a fellow commissioner who is only trying to do right by his constituents, holding yourself out as a sterling example of ethical behavior, you better make sure your own house is in order.

Barfield and Smith, as well as local radio talk show host Bill Mick, have called my filing of the complaints “politically motivated.” Mick went so far as to call me Tobia’s “lackey.” He apparently forgets I filed an ethics complaint against Tobia during his last campaign for state representative. The Commission on Ethics found the complaint without merit.

Dismissing a charge as “politically motivated” seems to be a popular refrain from elected officials who’ve broken the law. Former Clerk of Courts Mitch Needelman made the same claim in the BlueWare scandal. Any complaint, comment or utterance by anyone regarding anything having to do with any political position may be construed as political, but that does not make the complaint false.

The disrespect, hypocrisy and hubris displayed by Smith at the meeting about the lobbyist ordinance drove my complaint. The notion the complainant makes the complaint less valid turns the notion of objective law on its head. Form 6 financial disclosures exist to create transparency for the voters. Disclosure statutes exist to ensure elected officials comply. The merit of any complaint is determined by the Commission on Ethics, which conducts a thorough investigation and bases its decision on facts and Florida statutes, not political opinion.

Both county commissioners filed incorrect reports two years in a row. This is more than simple clerical error – it is a pattern of disregard for the rules they swore an oath to follow.

The voters deserve to know these elected officials can’t or won’t accurately file the reports required, and the complaint process and subsequent media coverage is how the voters find out they aren’t following the rules.

Matt Nye is a Republican candidate for Florida House District 52 covering central Brevard County. He’s running against GOP Rep. Thad Altman.

REPUBLICAN LIBERTY CAUCUS SUPPORTS NATIONWIDE SECOND AMENDMENT RALLIES

MELBOURNE, FL – The Republican Liberty Caucus (RLC) is asking all members and supporters to attend the nationwide rallies in support of the Second Amendment, hosted by the National Constitutional Coalition of Patriotic Americans.

The rallies are scheduled to take place in every state capitol simultaneously at 2pm EDT on Saturday, April 14, 2018.

“Our second amendment rights are clearly under attack in the wake of the Parkland shooting,” said Matt Nye, RLC National Chair. “Despite the repeated claims that ‘no one is coming for your guns’ and ‘no one is going to get rid of the Second Amendment’, the number of individuals and groups pushing for those very things is growing at an alarming rate.”

At the recent “March for Our Lives”, an anti-gun speaker proudly exclaimed that if given an inch, they would take a mile. A former United States Supreme Court Justice has called for the outright repeal of the Second Amendment. Florida has passed a bill increasing the minimum age to purchase a rifle to 21 and imposing a three-day waiting period for all gun sales.

“School officials and law enforcement had numerous opportunities to prevent the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School from unfolding, yet they failed to act,” Nye said. “The idea that more government intervention is the answer – that we should punish law-abiding gun-owners for the failures of government bureaucrats, law enforcement and the sins of a psychotic killer – is simply perverse.”

“We must show our support for the Second Amendment and the Constitution, while educating others about them,” Nye said. “We hope you will join us at your state capitol to do both on April 14th – complacency is not an option.”

Republican Liberty Caucus Endorses Sheriff Richard Mack for Arizona’s CD8 Special Election

PHOENIX, AZ – The Republican Liberty Caucus announced Monday its endorsement of Sheriff Richard Mack for the US House of Representatives District 8 special election in Arizona to replace Rep. Trent Franks.

“Sheriff Mack has been a stalwart defender of the Constitution for decades, and we are proud to stand behind him in his bid for the CD8 house seat,” said RLC National Chairman Matt Nye. “Sheriff Mack has a proven record of unflinching leadership and standing up against the over-reach of bureaucrats in Washington, D.C.”

A former Arizona Sheriff, Mack, is best known for challenging the Brady Bill, a gun control scheme requiring local law enforcement to perform background checks on prospective gun purchasers. He maintained that the Federal Government had no authority to command local officials and became the first sheriff in American history to sue the Federal Government and win at the US Supreme Court. The case was based on the Tenth Amendment, states’ rights and local sovereignty.

“I had the pleasure of meeting Sheriff Mack several years ago when he came to speak at a local event here in Brevard County, Florida, and I was thoroughly impressed,” Nye said. “From his experience as a sheriff, to his passionate defense of the founding principles of our Constitution, Sheriff Mack has proven time and again he has the integrity, the knowledge, and the force of will to effect much needed change in Washington, D.C.”

Republican Liberty Caucus Hires
Alex Snitker as New Executive Director

MELBOURNE, FL – The Republican Liberty Caucus is pleased to announce the selection of Alexander Snitker as its Executive Director. Alex will join the team on February 1, 2018. The selection was made after an extensive national search and selection process.

“Alex is the right person to execute the Republican Liberty Caucus’ vision and strategy, and we are thrilled to have him on board.” said Matt Nye, Chairman of the Republican Liberty Caucus. “In addition to being firmly on board with our organization’s principles and positions, Alex brings the skills and expertise needed to take our organization to the next level.”

Alex, a former United States Marine, has founded several grassroots organizations. Some of his accolades include founding the Liberty First Network, a legislative advocacy group in Florida; co-authoring the “The Neighborhood Project”, a book focused on organizing an effective activism strategy at the precinct level; consulting and managing numerous local and statewide campaigns in Florida; and serving as the former Vice Chairman of the Libertarian Party of Florida.

“I have worked very hard over the years to grow liberty-minded organizations, get liberty-minded candidates elected, and move policy in the Florida legislature toward liberty,” Snitker said. “As part of those efforts, I have worked in conjunction with the Republican Liberty Caucus of Florida for several years now, and I look to dedicating my time and resources to the RLC on a national level.”

RLC Chair Matt Nye said during the interview process Snitker is one of the most enthusiastic and hard-working people he’s ever met, and he is confident Snitker will be a tremendous asset to the organization.

“Alex brings a ton of energy, optimism and fresh ideas to the table,” Nye said. “Both of us believe the Republican Liberty Caucus is the best vehicle to deliver the liberty message to the electorate.”

Republican Liberty Caucus Endorses Austin Petersen for US Senate in Missouri

KANSAS CITY, MO – The National Board of the Republican Liberty Caucus (RLC) has voted unanimously to endorse Austin Petersen in his candidacy for U.S. Senate in Missouri’s Republican primary. The nominee will go on to face incumbent Democrat Claire McCaskill in the general election.

“Austin is the breath of fresh air Missourians need,” said RLC National Chair Matt Nye. “For years, Austin has advocated for less government and more liberty in his roles as commentator and pundit, and we are thrilled he has decided to make his voice heard in the United States Senate.”

Petersen, a Missouri native, was a candidate for president in 2016. He took second place in the crowded Libertarian primary behind Governor Gary Johnson and ahead of cyber security maverick John McAfee. Petersen is the founder of the online news source, The Libertarian Republic, and has also worked as a Producer for Judge Andrew Napolitano’s show Freedomwatch on Fox Business.

“Austin brings some much-needed common sense and has both the knowledge and the skills to effectively articulate the liberty message,” Nye said. “We don’t need another career politician in D.C., we need bold reform and leaders unashamed of consistently fighting for the principles of limited government, free markets and individual liberty; Austin is that leader and we’re proud to stand behind his candidacy.”

Petersen grew up on a horse farm in Peculiar, MO, and graduated Missouri State University with a degree in Fine Arts. After building a successful career in media in Washington, D.C. and New York, he returned to Kansas City, MO, where he now resides.

RLC Endorses Senator David Shafer for Lt. Governor of Georgia

0

DULUTH, GA – The Republican Liberty Caucus (RLC) has endorsed Senator David Shafer for Lieutenant Governor in Georgia. Shafer currently serves as the 68th President Pro Tempore of the Georgia Senate, a post to which he has been re-elected twice.

“The RLC is excited to endorse Senator Shafer for Lieutenant Governor,” said Matt Nye, National Chairman of the Republican Liberty Caucus. “He is a fiscal conservative who has shown that he can get things done. He led the fight to amend the Georgia Constitution to cap the state income tax and he re-wrote Georgia law to provide for zero based budgeting of all state spending.”

The RLC endorsement of Shafer was made through a two-stage process. Members of the Republican Liberty Caucus from Georgia screened Shafer’s candidacy first, and then recommended his endorsement to the RLC National Board.

“As a business owner and an elected official with a proven track record of fiscal conservatism, we are confident Senator Shafer is exactly who the state of Georgia needs in this position,” Nye said. “Candidates who follow through on their promises once elected are rare, but Senator Shafer’s 15 year legislative record shows that he can be trusted.”

Senator Shafer is a previous recipient of the RLC Champion of Liberty Award.

A graduate of the University of Georgia, Senator Shafer currently resides in Duluth with his wife Lee and daughter Ellie. His stepson J.W. is also a graduate of the University of Georgia.

Press Conference on Campaign Finance Reform Legislation Announced

Representative Joe Gruters (R) D-73 will be holding a press conference on Wednesday December 6th, 2017 at the state capitol to discuss his Campaign Finance Reform Legislation (HB 43). Senator Greg Steube (R) D-23 has filed the companion bill in the Senate (SB 122).

This legislation would prohibit Political Committees (PCs) and Electioneering Communications Organizations (ECOs) from making contributions to each other.

The use of political committees and electioneering communications organizations to make contributions to each other makes it extremely difficult to determine the original source of the contributions. In many cases contributions flow through multiple committees before reaching the final committee where the money is actually spent to influence the outcome of a political campaign. This legislation will make the election process more transparent and allow voters to make informed decisions about candidates.

Campaign Finance Reform has been a key priority for the Republican Liberty Caucus of Florida and the Come Clean Florida Coalition. Bob White, Chair of the Republican Liberty Caucus of Florida will be speaking at the press conference.

The press conference will be held on Wednesday December 6th, 2017 at 1:00 PM in the 4th floor rotunda between the two chambers.
