What the Trump Victory Means for Ohio

0

I am an insurgent Republican long since fed-up with our party and direction as a nation. Donald Trump won the presidency due in no small part to others like me. I have personally been highly critical of Mr. Trump and, for most of us, he was not our first choice. In the end, many of my colleagues chose to support our President-elect. I accept the national verdict. The debate now moves from Trump-the-candidate to what a Trump-led nation will look like.

I contend it was never about Donald Trump and always about a loud and emphatic rebuke of our nation’s lack of direction — epitomized by a party we felt had abandoned principle. My caucus represents those who will no longer allow themselves to be marginalized. The Republican Party can no longer count on a base reflexively supporting R candidates over the opposition merely because they carry a party label.

You and I deserve confidence in our candidates and our state leaders. We are demanding it.

Here in Ohio, Republican leadership has been sheltered from the national storm because our party holds all statewide offices and both legislative chambers. This is Kasich-country, and our Governor has created a unique bubble here. But, this is deceiving. We’ve benefitted from a Democratic Party unable to field competitive candidates, and from gerrymandering of legislative districts — a problem our party rightly brought before the voters and will end after the next census. Ohio Republican leadership must awaken to a new reality or be crushed by it.

Here is how we restore the GOP in Ohio as a party representative of its base. Stop fighting against the Democratic agenda and fight for a liberty agenda:

• Stand for individual rights. Recognize marginalized groups and their perspectives but champion individuals over the collective as the remedy. For example, stand for parental rights to direct child education. End arbitrary limitations on where individuals may carry concealed handguns for self-defense and limit civil liability in justified self-defense incidents. Further criminal justice reform, not as a race issue, but a human rights issue. Restrict less and hold accountable more.

• Stand for limited government. End civil asset forfeiture and eminent domain abuses. Advance municipal tax reform. Create a definitive pathway to eliminating the state income tax. Innovate property tax reform. Having failed to even reign in the rate of state budget growth, advance a plan to actually reduce the budget.

• Stand for free enterprise. End licensing laws with no other purpose than to decrease competition and innovation. Vigorously advance free market solutions for state ownership of everything from Medicaid to liquor stores to Worker’s Compensation insurance.

To his credit, Ohio GOP Chairman Matt Borges has agreed in principle to sit down with us and discuss how our grassroots caucus may be a conduit between party leadership and our disaffected base. We are uniquely positioned with our membership comprised of sitting state legislators, TEA Party leaders, and libertarians. We welcome this challenge and look forward to rebuilding trust.

The Republican Liberty Caucus since its founding in 1991 has billed itself as “Conscience of the GOP.” We need that conscience now more than ever.

RLC Joins the 1st Amendment Alliance

0

On October 1, the congressional deadline to prevent the IRS from trampling over the free-speech rights of nonprofits will expire. In early August, the Tax Revolution Institute (TRI) — a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that promotes “justice and integrity in the tax system” — launched the First Amendment Alliance (1AA): a nonpartisan effort to protect the free-speech rights of nonprofits. The Alliance now has over 50 groups that represent every segment of the political spectrum and civil society. The 1AA’s mission is to prevent the IRS from implementing Regulation 134417–13, otherwise known as the IRS “muzzle rule.”

Some of the organizations that currently form the 1AA include: Ax the Tax, Blue Republican, Christian Party of America, Christian Party of North Carolina, Citizens In Charge, Coffee Party USA, Common Ground Movement, Fight for the Future, Free the People, Legal Immigrants for America, Liberty Guard, Liberty Initiative Fund, Liberty Justice Center, Move to Amend, Muslims For Liberty, National Association of Parents, Our America Initiative, Parents Teachers and Advocates, Patriot Coalition, People Against the NDAA, Popular Resistance, Put Growth First, Restore the Fourth, Taxpayer Education Foundation, Taxpayers United of America, and many more. See the full list at 1stAA.org

In November 2015, Congress intervened to defund the IRS from taking action on this new rule, but those protections are set to expire on October 1 of this year. TRI has previously called on concerned citizens and organizations affected by this rule to act now by joining the First Amendment Alliance and taking the fight back to Congress.

“The IRS disregards the rights of citizens, businesses and non-profits on a daily basis,” said RLC Chairman Matt Nye. “The Republican Liberty Caucus is gladly joining the First Amendment Alliance to lead the fight against crony bureaucrats who threaten our most important freedom. We will always stand to protect the First Amendment, and ask other non-profits to join the 1st Amendment Alliance to stop this abridgment.”

Liberty Rights vs. Welfare Rights

0

By Marven Goodman
A right is a principle that specifies something which an individual should be free to have or do. A right is an entitlement, something you possess free and clear, something you can exercise without asking anyone’s permission.

Our country was founded on the principle that individuals possess the “inalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Along with the right to property, which the Founding Fathers also regarded as a fundamental right.

These rights are known as liberty rights, because they protect the right to act freely. The right to property is the right to act freely in the effort to acquire wealth, the right to buy and sell and keep the fruits of one’s labor. It is not a right to expect to be given wealth.

Welfare rights on the other hand are a claim of need to the goods and services produced by others. Always when demanded by a government this redistribution of property is done under threat of force. Examples of welfare rights are; a right to food, shelter, education, a job, healthcare, cell phone, transgender bathrooms, etc, etc, etc, etc.

The wording of the Declaration of Independence is quite precise in this regard. It attributes to us the right to the pursuit of happiness, not to happiness per se. Society can’t guarantee us happiness; that’s our own responsibility figure that out as individuals we are given the freedom to peacefully pursue what makes us happy.

This is how welfare rights are quite different from liberty rights.

Liberty rights are rights to freedom of action. But they don’t guarantee that one will always succeed in obtaining any particular good or service one may be seeking because of need, or want.

In the same way, the right to life is the right to act freely for one’s self-preservation. It is not a right to be immune from death by natural causes, even an untimely death. The right to life is a right, and expectation to be immune from unnatural causes such as execution by a government; either pre or post birth.

The purpose of liberty rights is to protect the individuality of a human. They leave individuals personally responsible for their own lives, for meeting their own needs. They provide us with the social conditions we need to carry out that responsibility such as the freedom to act on the basis of our own judgment, in pursuit of our own ends; and the right to use and dispose of the material resources we have acquired by our efforts.

Because natural rights are an entitlement, not a privilege or favor, we do not owe anyone else any gratitude for their recognition of our rights of liberty. Natural law outlines the concepts of universal natural rights, the same as our God given inalienable rights, that cannot be subjugated or denied by arbitrary laws enacted by greedy men.

This is the most basic principle of freedom and embodies the assertion that individuals are ends in themselves who may not be forced against their will to provide welfare rights to others for any purpose, including those deemed best for the social good of all by a democratic majority vote. Liberty rights are never subject to mob rule.

National Board Endorses Mark Bircher

The National Board of the Republican Liberty Caucus (RLC) has voted to endorse Mark Bircher in his race for the U.S. House of Representatives from Florida’s 13th Congressional District following the recommendation made by the RLC of Florida.

Mr. Bircher, born in Pensacola, lives in Pinellas County, which is part of Congressional District 13. He is a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, joined the military in 1971 and retired as Brigadier General in 2009 with the United States Marine Corps Reserve. In addition to his three decades of military service, Mr. Bircher is an attorney and an active member of the Florida Bar. He is a graduate of Stetson University College of Law.

“We’re proud to endorse decorated veteran Mark Bircher. Mr. Bircher has proven that he isn’t willing to just talk about his love for liberty. He’s risked his life for it. Mr. Bircher’s opponent, incumbent Rep. David Jolly, is without question one of the most liberal Republican Congressmen in the U.S. House of Representatives. We can’t afford to have David Jolly serving in Congress any longer. Florida, and America, needs Mark Bircher” said Chairman Matt Nye.

Mr. Bircher is one of a growing group of Republicans calling for adherence to the Constitution and an end to undeclared wars. He is married to his wife of 15 years and is the father of one son, Bill.

Mark Bircher said, “I am pleased to receive the endorsement of the Republican Liberty Caucus. Our Republic must return to the founding principles of the Constitution: limited government, fiscal conservatism, personal responsibility and the rule of law.”

Republican Liberty Caucus Forms Oklahoma Chapter

0

Oklahoma City, OK: The national Republican Liberty Caucus (RLC) has officially recognized the Oklahoma Republican Liberty Caucus as their newest state chapter. The RLC’s organizational mission “is to recruit and endorse candidates who support the RLC’s agenda, elect limited government Republicans to political office, and change the direction of the Republican Party to reflect our vision of peace and prosperity.”

The Oklahoma RLC was chartered with 13 founding members, consisting of Republican Party chairmen, grassroots leaders, elected officials, and citizen activists from across the state.
Unanimously elected Oklahoma Chapter Chairman, Marven Goodman, currently serves as County Commissioner of Logan County District 1. Goodman stated, “Our goal in chartering this organization is to provide a place for like-minded Republicans who wish to help restore limited government politics to the Republican Party and return it to the principles of the freedom philosophy.”

Founding member, board member, and former state representative Charles Key commented, “The Republican Party has traditionally promoted the original principles of limited government as they are enumerated in The Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution. But increasingly, Republican Party leaders and elected officials only give lip service to those principles as they vote and work against them. IT IS TIME FOR A CHANGE! The Republican Liberty Caucus seeks to expose and change that by focusing on what made America great – liberty, limited government, and the rule of law.”

Republican Liberty Caucus national Chairman Matt Nye said, “We welcome the Oklahoma Charter to the RLC. The founders of this charter are impressive people, and we’re grateful they have chosen to use their considerable experience and talents to continue the fight for liberty.”

Membership is available to registered Republicans. Additional information about the Oklahoma Republican Liberty Caucus may be found at www.OKRLC.org.

RLC of Virginia Chairman Cliff Thies Releases 2015 Libery Index

Since 1989 longtime RLC legend Clifford Thies has compiled the “Liberty Index,” an in depth scorecard for all members of Congress. Thies is a Professor of Finance and Economics at Shenandoah University, an author at the Independent Institute and the newly elected Chairman of the RLC of Virginia.

The Liberty Index has three different ratings for members: Personal Liberty, Economic Liberty and an average score of the two which is based upon roll call votes. The Index we’re releasing is for the year of 2015 which is half of the 114th Congress. Hold your representatives’ feet to the fire with the truth by using the Liberty Index as your go-to congressional scorecard.

Political Independence

0

By Vermont Rep. Paul Dame

“When did we stop celebrating Independence Day? I hope that it’s different for other folks, but I know in my short memory as a millennial, my whole life I grew up celebrating “The 4th of July” and very rarely heard it called “Independence Day.” It seems like there is certainly a correlation between dropping the “Independence” and the very character of our nation seeming to become increasingly dependent – though it’s hard to determine which caused the other. It’s probably fair to say that there has never been a time when so many Americans have relied so heavily on their government to meet their basic needs.

That’s pretty astonishing in light of the fact that the first American generation, those who declared our independence from Great Britain, did not rely on their government even to protect them from armies composed of men who lived half a world away. They were able to accomplish political Independence because they all lived in a time where most people had to live incredibly self-sufficient, personally independent lives – something completely foreign to the vast majority of Americans today.

Politics is always a downstream derivative of culture. Many of the settlers left the comforts of a civilized Britain to set out into unknown territory with absolutely no government-provided infrastructure at all. Contrast that with today where most of us dread spending our vacation – or just one night – in a place that doesn’t have a WiFi signal.

There must have been certain contempt from that amazing generation regarding their government back in Great Britain. They had come here, literally building their homes and businesses with their own hands, with little to no aid from their king, and as the colonies grew and became more prosperous and wealthier due to the hard work and industriousness of their inhabitants – then the king wanted to get involved. Not to help further spur economic growth, or even to provide the colonies with other amenities afforded to their relatives back in England – but to take a piece of the action. Yet now today’s average American surrenders more than one third of their income (income tax, social security tax, medicare/medicaid tax, state & local income tax) to their government, while pioneers of the new digital age seem apathetic.

It seems clear to me that libertarians like myself will never see the restoration of a political independence under these conditions. It’s too hard to swim upstream. I’m not convinced we will see Liberty in our Lifetime, until we first see the restoration of culture of personal independence in our everyday lives. Too often when a problem is identified, or a difficulty encountered, too many Americans think of their Government as the first-response team. Immediately think tanks begin planning a legislative or executive response. As long as Americans ask that of their Government – the Government will continue to deliver. Therefor we need to create a culture where show others how to be personally Independent before we can expect them to join us in our cause of political independence.

I hear small government conservatives complain that we don’t need a “Nanny State.” But the results of several elections seem to indicate that many people believe we do. Instead of complaining, what conservatives need to do is become better, more approachable examples to show their community how to solve problems without the coercive force of government. There are countless examples out there of individual people taking responsibility for anything from erasing graffitti, to snow removal. You think some people need to “just get a job” – have you ever shown anyone how to do that? If you’re not doing it – then who will if the state stopped? The answer ought to be you. We need to teach people the life skills they need to live as self-sufficiently as possible, before they will ever be ready to give up the dependent relationship they have with their government.

I also hear liberals complain about the many injustices and unfairness in the world, saying that if Government doesn’t care for certain needs, who else will? Prove them wrong. It only takes one person to be a counter-example. Instead of complaining, what liberals need to do is inspire those in their community to become more compassionate human beings and better neighbors. If Liberals could make their compassion contagious, and show everyone how meaningful it is to be a benefit to your neighbors, even one would do it. Before you advocate for more government spending on anything – examine whether you yourself are willing to give more to the same cause. Why are you using the levels of government to force people who are less passionate, and many who are even poorer than you pay when you won’t even do it yourself?

That’s how our nation’s Independence was won; by both liberals and conservatives, both Federalists and Democratic-Republicans, working together to bring about a freer society. They lived in a time where there was already a well-established culture of Independence, so fighting for political independence was relatively easy. Today, those who want to see more independence from an interfering and politically-charged government have a lot of fallow ground to plow when it comes to restoring a culture of personal independence. Whether we do that, or we don’t, the American people will have the government they deserve. We can continue the path we are going down – more government involved in more aspects of our lives – or we can fight for a future that leaves us politically independent; meaning we are no longer dependent on our political system, one where our individual lives are not greatly impacted by whichever party or person is in power. That’s why Independence united these states over 200 years ago. They saw that despite their differences there was common ground in having a political system that left them to rely on their own personal Independence. That’s something perhaps an unprecedented number of Americans will be looking for while considering their desire to see a government that both restrains a potential President Trump from trampling on our civil liberties – and a potential President Clinton from trampling on our economic liberties.”

Paul Dame is a State Representative in Vermont representing the Village of Essex Junction and was elected in 2014. He is a native Vermonter who grew up on a family dairy farm and earned his degree in secondary education (with a concentration in mathematics) from the University of Vermont in 2005. In 2014, Dame became the first elected President of the Vermont Young Professionals and was named one of Vermont Business Magazine’s Top 40 Under 40.
