Delegate Deadline: 2/26

0

As we recently announced, our national convention is set to be held this upcoming Memorial Day Weekend at the Rosen Centre in Orlando Florida. Per RLC bylaws, any and all members of the Republican Liberty Caucus are automatically permitted to be delegates representing their respective states (as long as it is already chartered) but must have their dues paid at least 90 days before the convention takes place. That deadline is approaching in just a few days so it is urgent that you join NOW at www.RLC.org/join

Our convention is going to host some of the boldest leaders in the liberty movement, you can’t afford to miss this opportunity to network with the most dedicated volunteer activists in the country and relax in the Florida Sun.

After the Delegate Deadline on 2/26, anyone can still join the RLC and attend our convention, but we want you to have the unique opportunity to participate as a delegate. Delegates will attend our state and national business meeting, vote for RLC leadership and have a chance to put their strategy on the table of how to win.

Last convention, we heard from the likes of Rand Paul, Ted Cruz, Peter Schiff, Grover Norquist and many more, so expect nothing short of some of the brightest minds in the movement to be speaking this time around!

SINCE 1991, we’ve sustained ourselves as an all-volunteer organization relying primarily on dues paid members and grassroots donors. PLEASE JOIN NOW BEFORE THE DEADLINE ON SATURDAY!

Regular dues are $45 per person, $30 with a Military or Student discount or please consider becoming a Premium member for $75.

Thank you for helping us continue our fight to return the Republican Party back to its Jeffersonian roots of limited government, individual liberty and free markets. We look forward to seeing you in Orlando delegates!

Effect change within the GOP by participating in the Precinct Project!

0

In short, our goal is to “work within the Republican Party to move it in the direction of limited government, respect for individual rights, and a commitment to free market economics”. To achieve that objective, our state charters, local chapters and national organization aggressively seeks to find, support, and elect candidates to public office who share our values. Thus, one way to achieve this objective is to elect liberty movement mayors, city/county councilmen, Governors, State House members, U.S. Senators and U.S. Representatives, etc., and finally to put a libertarian Republican in the White House. The support of liberty movement candidates cannot be overstressed and is extremely important if we are to meet our objectives. But, there is a second and equally important activity that has not been given the attention it deserves – that is the Precinct Project.

Let’s look at the hierarchy of the Republican Party. In most states the lowest level of the Republican Party is the local precinct. For example, RLC member Steve Hoffman lives in Horry County, South Carolina and Horry County is divided into 124 precincts. His precinct is Burgess 1 and consists of over 1000 registered Republicans. The next level of the party is the County Executive Committee. The next level is the State Executive Committee. And the final level is the Republican National Committee.

State RLC Charter organizations and local RLC chapters can have significant influence in determining the makeup of local precincts and the county level executive committees. Keep in mind the objective is to fill these entities with proponents of limited government, individual rights and free market economics.

How to begin the process? Let’s use Steve as an example again.

1. Within South Carolina, the Republican Party goes through a reorganization once every 2 years. Local precinct officers are elected first as well as county delegates to a county Republican Party Convention (this is where you as an RLCer want to get involved). Prepare to get yourself elected as either a precinct committeeperson or executive committee member (preferred) at the designated “re-org” meeting. Also, when you attend the re-org meeting, put your name down as a volunteer to be a delegate to your county convention and your state Republican convention. Every precinct is authorized X many delegates to the Republican County Convention. If you volunteer there is a 90% chance you will be selected, since there are often more precinct positions than there are volunteers.

2. At this point, you are now the Committeeperson for your precinct and you will also be attending the County Republican Party Convention (usually held 30 days after the first re-org meeting). As a delegate to the convention you can now vote on the future officers of the County Republican Party. Don’t like the current crop of establishment, crony-capitalist, special interest favoring Republicans that currently run your local party? This is now your chance to “drain the local swamp” and elect officers who will support what? Yes, you are right – limited government, individual rights and free market economics. By the way, if you are so inclined and have experience within your county GOP, go ahead and have your name placed on the ballot as one of the county GOP officers.

3. Next item of agenda at the County convention will be to elect the elect the delegates who will attend the State convention. Make sure you campaign (press a lot of palms at the convention) to get yourself elected as a State convention delegate. If you can’t be a delegate due to work/financial obligations – help one of your allies win because each of us need as much help we can get from one another.

4. Now you’re a county executive committee member, have attended the County Convention, got elected as a state convention delegate and are now attending your state Republican Party Convention. This will be your chance to vote for the State GOP Chairman, and various levels of Vice Chairman, and other state GOP officers. You will also vote on any changes to by-laws or resolutions that are brought up at the State convention. Of course, the objective is to vote for officers who support (by now we hope you have guessed before we print it) – limited government, individual rights and free market economics. By the way, if you are so inclined and have experience within your state GOP, go ahead and have your name placed on the state ballot as one of the state officers.

5. After the conventions you start attending your first county GOP committee meetings. These meetings normally occur on a monthly basis but will vary from county to county. During the first meeting you will be electing your county representative on the State GOP Executive Committee. And of course the objective is to elect a person who shares our values of limited government, individual rights and free market economics.

6. The kicker: If you and your fellow RLC members have successfully grasped the concepts of the Precinct Project, your state GOP executive committee will then appoint or elect one or two members to the Republican National Committee. Outside of electing liberty movement candidates to public office, there is nothing more important than to have members on the Republican National Committee support the concepts of limited government, individual rights and free market economics.

Voila! – And that is Precinct Project in a nut shell!

Together by finding, supporting and electing political candidates who support our objectives and by participating in Precinct Project, we will succeed in moving our country in the direction of limited government, individual rights and free market economics.

POP QUIZ
1. What is the objective of the RLC?
2. What are two ways that RLC members can move the Republican Party and hopefully our country in the direction that is the objective of the RLC?
3.Are you committed to helping the RLC meet its objective?

Today Is Bill of Rights Day

0

Written by Tim Lynch; Director of Criminal Justice, Cato Institute

Today is Bill of Rights Day. So it’s an appropriate time to consider the state of our constitutional safeguards.

Let’s consider each amendment in turn.

The First Amendment says that “Congress shall make no law… abridging the freedom of speech.” Government officials, however, have insisted that they can gag recipients of “national security letters” and censor broadcast ads in the name of campaign finance reform and arrest people for simply distributing pamphlets on a sidewalk.

The Second Amendment says the people have the right “to keep and bear arms.” Government officials, however, make it difficult to keep a gun in the home and make it a crime for a citizen to carry a gun for self-protection.

The Third Amendment says soldiers may not be quartered in our homes without the consent of the owners. This safeguard is one of the few that is in fine shape – so we can pause here for a laugh.

The Fourth Amendment says the people have the right to be secure against unreasonable searches and seizures. Government officials, however, insist that they can conduct commando-style raids on our homes and treat airline travelers like prison inmates by conducting virtual strip searches.

The Fifth Amendment says that private property shall not be taken “for public use without just compensation.” Government officials, however, insist that they can use eminent domain to take away our property and give it to other private parties who covet it. The Fifth Amendment also protects our right against self-incrimination, but government officials tell us lies and trick many people into waiving that right while they warn their own families to “lawyer up” immediately.

The Sixth Amendment says that in criminal prosecutions, the person accused is guaranteed a right to trial by jury. Government officials, however, insist that they can punish people who want to have a trial—“throwing the book” at those who refuse to plead guilty—which explains why 95 percent of the criminal cases never go to trial.

The Seventh Amendment guarantees the right to a jury trial in civil cases where the controversy “shall exceed twenty dollars.” Government officials, however, insist that they can impose draconian fines on people without jury trials.

The Eighth Amendment prohibits cruel and unusual punishments. Government officials, however, insist that a life sentence for a nonviolent drug offense is not cruel.

The Ninth Amendment says that the enumeration in the Constitution of certain rights should not be construed to deny or disparage others “retained by the people.” Government officials, however, insist that they will decide for themselves what rights, if any, will be retained by the people.

The Tenth Amendment says that the powers not delegated to the federal government are reserved to the states, or to the people. Government officials, however, insist that they will decide for themselves what powers they possess, and have extended federal control over health care, crime, education, and other matters the Constitution reserves to the states and the people.

It’s a disturbing snapshot, to be sure, but not one the Framers of the Constitution would have found altogether surprising. They would sometimes refer to written constitutions as mere “parchment barriers,” or what we call “paper tigers.” They nevertheless concluded that having a written constitution was better than having nothing at all.

The key point is this: A free society does not just “happen.” It has to be deliberately created and deliberately maintained. Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty. To remind our fellow citizens of their responsibility in that regard, the Cato Institute has distributed more than six million copies of our pocket Constitution. At this time of year, it’ll make a great stocking stuffer.

Let’s enjoy the holidays (and remember many of the positive trends that are underway) but let’s also resolve to be more vigilant about defending our Constitution.

Congratulations to the RLCOH Supported and Endorsed Candidates

0

The Republican Liberty Caucus of Ohio (RLCOH) congratulates their supported candidates and members who have won election to the Ohio House of Representatives.

The RLCOH calls itself the “Conscience of the Ohio GOP.” Says RLCOH Chairman Bill Yarbrough, “Our role is critical to the success of the Republican brand. Ohio GOP leadership is tasked with winning elections and the RLCOH complements this effort. The RLCOH helps to ensure those most likely to win are also those who best exhibit the values and around which the party is organized.”

In February of this year, the Candidate Review Committee released a list of candidates for Ohio House and Senate that were endorsed and recommended for the primary elections, and Committee Chairman Scott Jerzyk would like to congratulate the following individuals for their general election victories:

  • Thomas Brinkman (HD27) Recommended and Endorsed in the March Primary, and recipient of the 2016 Champion of Liberty Award.
  • Wes Goodman (HD87) Recommended and Endorsed in the March Primary
  • Bill Seitz (HD30) Recommended in the March Primary
  • Candace Keller (HD53) Recommended in the March Primary, member of the RLCOH
  • Dick Stein (HD57) Recommended in the March Primary
  • John Becker (HD65) Recommended in the March Primary, member of the RLCOH
  • Andrew Brenner (HD67) Recommended in the March Primary
  • Ron Hood (HD78) Recommended in the March Primary
  • Nino Vitale (HD85) Recommended in the March Primary

“We look forward to working with our new legislators to move Ohio forward to a more free state, and especially congratulate our own RLCOH members Candace Keller on her win and John Becker on his re-election,” said Committee Chairman Scott Jerzyk. “We are very proud of them, and look forward to continued success for them in years to come.”

What the Trump Victory Means for Ohio

0

I am an insurgent Republican long since fed-up with our party and direction as a nation. Donald Trump won the presidency due in no small part to others like me. I have personally been highly critical of Mr. Trump and, for most of us, he was not our first choice. In the end, many of my colleagues chose to support our President-elect. I accept the national verdict. The debate now moves from Trump-the-candidate to what a Trump-led nation will look like.

I contend it was never about Donald Trump and always about a loud and emphatic rebuke of our nation’s lack of direction — epitomized by a party we felt had abandoned principle. My caucus represents those who will no longer allow themselves to be marginalized. The Republican Party can no longer count on a base reflexively supporting R candidates over the opposition merely because they carry a party label.

You and I deserve confidence in our candidates and our state leaders. We are demanding it.

Here in Ohio, Republican leadership has been sheltered from the national storm because our party holds all statewide offices and both legislative chambers. This is Kasich-country, and our Governor has created a unique bubble here. But, this is deceiving. We’ve benefitted from a Democratic Party unable to field competitive candidates, and from gerrymandering of legislative districts — a problem our party rightly brought before the voters and will end after the next census. Ohio Republican leadership must awaken to a new reality or be crushed by it.

Here is how we restore the GOP in Ohio as a party representative of its base. Stop fighting against the Democratic agenda and fight for a liberty agenda:

• Stand for individual rights. Recognize marginalized groups and their perspectives but champion individuals over the collective as the remedy. For example, stand for parental rights to direct child education. End arbitrary limitations on where individuals may carry concealed handguns for self-defense and limit civil liability in justified self-defense incidents. Further criminal justice reform, not as a race issue, but a human rights issue. Restrict less and hold accountable more.

• Stand for limited government. End civil asset forfeiture and eminent domain abuses. Advance municipal tax reform. Create a definitive pathway to eliminating the state income tax. Innovate property tax reform. Having failed to even reign in the rate of state budget growth, advance a plan to actually reduce the budget.

• Stand for free enterprise. End licensing laws with no other purpose than to decrease competition and innovation. Vigorously advance free market solutions for state ownership of everything from Medicaid to liquor stores to Worker’s Compensation insurance.

To his credit, Ohio GOP Chairman Matt Borges has agreed in principle to sit down with us and discuss how our grassroots caucus may be a conduit between party leadership and our disaffected base. We are uniquely positioned with our membership comprised of sitting state legislators, TEA Party leaders, and libertarians. We welcome this challenge and look forward to rebuilding trust.

The Republican Liberty Caucus since its founding in 1991 has billed itself as “Conscience of the GOP.” We need that conscience now more than ever.

RLC Joins the 1st Amendment Alliance

0

On October 1, the congressional deadline to prevent the IRS from trampling over the free-speech rights of nonprofits will expire. In early August, the Tax Revolution Institute (TRI) — a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that promotes “justice and integrity in the tax system” — launched the First Amendment Alliance (1AA): a nonpartisan effort to protect the free-speech rights of nonprofits. The Alliance now has over 50 groups that represent every segment of the political spectrum and civil society. The 1AA’s mission is to prevent the IRS from implementing Regulation 134417–13, otherwise known as the IRS “muzzle rule.”

Some of the organizations that currently form the 1AA include: Ax the Tax, Blue Republican, Christian Party of America, Christian Party of North Carolina, Citizens In Charge, Coffee Party USA, Common Ground Movement, Fight for the Future, Free the People, Legal Immigrants for America, Liberty Guard, Liberty Initiative Fund, Liberty Justice Center, Move to Amend, Muslims For Liberty, National Association of Parents, Our America Initiative, Parents Teachers and Advocates, Patriot Coalition, People Against the NDAA, Popular Resistance, Put Growth First, Restore the Fourth, Taxpayer Education Foundation, Taxpayers United of America, and many more. See the full list at 1stAA.org

In November 2015, Congress intervened to defund the IRS from taking action on this new rule, but those protections are set to expire on October 1 of this year. TRI has previously called on concerned citizens and organizations affected by this rule to act now by joining the First Amendment Alliance and taking the fight back to Congress.

“The IRS disregards the rights of citizens, businesses and non-profits on a daily basis,” said RLC Chairman Matt Nye. “The Republican Liberty Caucus is gladly joining the First Amendment Alliance to lead the fight against crony bureaucrats who threaten our most important freedom. We will always stand to protect the First Amendment, and ask other non-profits to join the 1st Amendment Alliance to stop this abridgment.”

Liberty Rights vs. Welfare Rights

0

By Marven Goodman
A right is a principle that specifies something which an individual should be free to have or do. A right is an entitlement, something you possess free and clear, something you can exercise without asking anyone’s permission.

Our country was founded on the principle that individuals possess the “inalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Along with the right to property, which the Founding Fathers also regarded as a fundamental right.

These rights are known as liberty rights, because they protect the right to act freely. The right to property is the right to act freely in the effort to acquire wealth, the right to buy and sell and keep the fruits of one’s labor. It is not a right to expect to be given wealth.

Welfare rights on the other hand are a claim of need to the goods and services produced by others. Always when demanded by a government this redistribution of property is done under threat of force. Examples of welfare rights are; a right to food, shelter, education, a job, healthcare, cell phone, transgender bathrooms, etc, etc, etc, etc.

The wording of the Declaration of Independence is quite precise in this regard. It attributes to us the right to the pursuit of happiness, not to happiness per se. Society can’t guarantee us happiness; that’s our own responsibility figure that out as individuals we are given the freedom to peacefully pursue what makes us happy.

This is how welfare rights are quite different from liberty rights.

Liberty rights are rights to freedom of action. But they don’t guarantee that one will always succeed in obtaining any particular good or service one may be seeking because of need, or want.

In the same way, the right to life is the right to act freely for one’s self-preservation. It is not a right to be immune from death by natural causes, even an untimely death. The right to life is a right, and expectation to be immune from unnatural causes such as execution by a government; either pre or post birth.

The purpose of liberty rights is to protect the individuality of a human. They leave individuals personally responsible for their own lives, for meeting their own needs. They provide us with the social conditions we need to carry out that responsibility such as the freedom to act on the basis of our own judgment, in pursuit of our own ends; and the right to use and dispose of the material resources we have acquired by our efforts.

Because natural rights are an entitlement, not a privilege or favor, we do not owe anyone else any gratitude for their recognition of our rights of liberty. Natural law outlines the concepts of universal natural rights, the same as our God given inalienable rights, that cannot be subjugated or denied by arbitrary laws enacted by greedy men.

This is the most basic principle of freedom and embodies the assertion that individuals are ends in themselves who may not be forced against their will to provide welfare rights to others for any purpose, including those deemed best for the social good of all by a democratic majority vote. Liberty rights are never subject to mob rule.

National Board Endorses Mark Bircher

0

The National Board of the Republican Liberty Caucus (RLC) has voted to endorse Mark Bircher in his race for the U.S. House of Representatives from Florida’s 13th Congressional District following the recommendation made by the RLC of Florida.

Mr. Bircher, born in Pensacola, lives in Pinellas County, which is part of Congressional District 13. He is a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, joined the military in 1971 and retired as Brigadier General in 2009 with the United States Marine Corps Reserve. In addition to his three decades of military service, Mr. Bircher is an attorney and an active member of the Florida Bar. He is a graduate of Stetson University College of Law.

“We’re proud to endorse decorated veteran Mark Bircher. Mr. Bircher has proven that he isn’t willing to just talk about his love for liberty. He’s risked his life for it. Mr. Bircher’s opponent, incumbent Rep. David Jolly, is without question one of the most liberal Republican Congressmen in the U.S. House of Representatives. We can’t afford to have David Jolly serving in Congress any longer. Florida, and America, needs Mark Bircher” said Chairman Matt Nye.

Mr. Bircher is one of a growing group of Republicans calling for adherence to the Constitution and an end to undeclared wars. He is married to his wife of 15 years and is the father of one son, Bill.

Mark Bircher said, “I am pleased to receive the endorsement of the Republican Liberty Caucus. Our Republic must return to the founding principles of the Constitution: limited government, fiscal conservatism, personal responsibility and the rule of law.”
